Update: Santana to the Mets

Sorry to be a little late on posting this. Many sources are reporting that the Twins and Mets have agreed to a trade that will send two-time Cy Young winner Johan Santana to the Mets in return for a package of four prospects. That package includes outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Kevin Mulvey and Deolis Guerra. The deal is reportedly dependent on the Mets negotiating a contract extension with Santana.

It's awfully tough to feel remotely positive about this trade as a Twins fan. Full analysis tomorrow.

I don't think it is tough to be positive about this trade. Gomez could be the next Torii Hunter and Guerra the next Liriano. Mulvey and Humber are probably equivalent to Slowey and Baker. That is quite a haul if everyone works out.

Of course they likely won't all work out, but it still isn't a bad trade.

If everything works out, then sure, it's a fine trade. Unfortunately, there are a lot of question marks floating around all of these players, whereas most of the other proposed trades would have included at least one relatively sure contributor at the big-league level.

The wierd thing is the Mets (at least on paper) seem to be giving up less to get Santana than the Mariners are offering Baltimore for Erik Bedard.
