Offseason Wish List

The upcoming offseason is going to be a hugely important one for newly appointed general manager Bill Smith and the Twins organization. After a disappointing 2007 campaign, the team will look to rebound while sorely needing to improve in several areas and at the same time dealing with several sticky contract situations.

Today I am going to break down the moves that I would make this offseason if I were in Smith's shoes. I'll have to do some guesswork in terms of what it would take to acquire certain players via trade and the amounts that free agents would sign for, but I think that for the most part the numbers are realistic and the moves are feasible.

Considering the Twins' history of being quiet in the offseason, I doubt that all (if any) of these moves will be made, but I wanted to show how the Twins can make a rebuilding effort during the offseason while remaining very competitive in 2008.

If you find any of these moves to be ridiculous, or have some thoughts of your own, I'd love to hear your ideas.

***

1) Let Torii Hunter walk.
As much as we all love Hunter, it's just not feasible to hand a huge long-term contract to a guy that will turn 33 next season. By letting Hunter walk, the Twins will receive two high picks in next June's draft as compensation.

Of course, Hunter's departure would leave a major hole in center field, which will be addressed with the next move...

2) Trade Johan Santana to Dodgers for OF Matt Kemp and SP Clayton Kershaw.
I talked about this rumored trade yesterday, noting that the deal "would certainly be enticing." While it's difficult to think about the Twins parting with their best player and one of the best pitchers of this generation, I find it unlikely that the Twins will be able to re-sign Santana for the type of money he'll be able to get.

If the Twins can't re-sign Santana, we have to start considering which is more valuable: one more year of Santana or a couple stud prospects and an extra $13.25 million in payroll next season. All things considered, I'd have to lean toward the latter. Santana is my favorite Twin, but if he's going to be gone after next year anyway and you have a chance to get a phenomenal pitching prospect and an MLB-ready 23-year-old who can play center field, I think you've got to jump on it.

3) Trade Anthony Swarzak and Oswaldo Sosa to Rockies for 3B Garrett Atkins.
I'm not going off of any particular rumors with this trade proposition; I sort of just made this one up myself, so it's possible I don't know what I'm talking about. What I do know is this: the Rockies have a very nice 3B prospect named Ian Stewart knocking at the door in Triple-A, and as such Atkins is expendable to them. I also know that Swarzak and Sosa are very good prospects, and that Sosa's ground ball tendencies would play well in Coors Field.

This would be a tremendous deal for the Twins. They'd solve their long-standing issues at third base with an excellent right-handed hitter in Atkins. And while they'd be losing arguably their best pitching prospect in Swarzak, the Twins could absorb that hit having acquired Kershaw in the Santana deal.

Would the Rockies make this deal? I know that their organization is always looking for pitching, although they might be looking for more major-league-ready talent having turned themselves back into contenders this season. Still, if I was in charge down in Colorado this is certainly an offer I'd consider.

4) Sign Barry Bonds to one-year, $18 million deal.
Alright, this one might seem like a bit of a stretch. But, here's my reasoning:

We know that Bonds won't be playing in San Francisco next year, as the Giants officially ruled out that possibility recently. We think he still wants to play somewhere next year, preferably as a designated hitter since he'll be 43 and has bad knees. Minnesota would make sense for Bonds for a couple of reasons: 1) there is a huge need for a DH here; and 2) it's not a huge market so he'd be able to stay out of the spotlight to some degree, which I'm guessing would appeal to him given his hatred for the media. He also would probably like to join a team with realistic championship aspirations, as opposed to, say, Texas.

With Hunter and Santana both departing, the Twins would have a ton of extra money to work with next season. The beauty of a one-year contract is that there is very little risk involved. Even if Bonds drops off due to old age or is hampered by injuries, the Twins will have no commitment past the 2008 season. Additionally, getting that big salary off the books after one year would allow the Twins to work on extending guys like Justin Morneau and Michael Cuddyer. Bringing the Home Run King to Minnesota would almost certainly have a positive effect on ticket sales, and Bonds's presence in the No. 3 spot could completely change the complexion of the Twins' lineup. From competitive and financial standpoints, this acquisition is almost a no-brainer.

The question is whether the Twins would be willing to make the logical gamble on Bonds. Would this generally conservative front office be willing to look past the dark cloud that hovers over Barry's head and see the positives he would bring? And, more importantly, could an organization that has always greatly valued personality bring itself to bring in one of the worst clubhouse characters in baseball history?

Incidentally, while I have been pondering this idea for some time now, Joe Christensen wrote a story for the Star Tribune today indicating that the Twins may give consideration to signing Bonds.

5) Re-sign Carlos Silva for three years/$21 million
I feel weird suggesting this, because up until this point I have consistently said that the Twins should let Silva walk this offseason without thinking twice. However, if all the above situations were to play out, I think it would be wise to re-up Silva as long as he's still willing to give a hometown discount. With Santana gone, it would be nice to have a guy with some experience to help anchor what would be a very young rotation. No doubt Ron Gardenhire would like to have his veteran presence.

This deal supposes that Silva is still willing to give the Twins a discount, which may be less likely with his buddy Santana gone. If Silva is looking for around $10 million/season, which I have hypothesized he could get on the open market, then it would be best to show him the door.

***

With all of these moves, here is how I'd envision the Twins' 2008 roster coming out of spring training:

STARTING LINEUP
1. Jason Bartlett, SS
2. Joe Mauer, C
3. Barry Bonds, DH
4. Garrett Atkins, 3B
5. Justin Morneau, 1B
6. Michael Cuddyer, RF
7. Jason Kubel, LF
8. Matt Kemp, CF
9. Alexi Casilla, 2B

BENCH
Mike Redmond, C
Nick Punto, IF
Brian Buscher, IF
Lew Ford, OF
Jason Tyner, OF

STARTING ROTATION
1. Francisco Liriano, LH
2. Matt Garza, RH
3. Carlos Silva, RH
4. Scott Baker, RH
5. Glen Perkins, LH

BULLPEN
Joe Nathan, RH
Pat Neshek, RH
Matt Guerrier, RH
Dennys Reyes, LH
Boof Bonser, RH
Juan Rincon, RH

NOTES:
There is some room for change with the bullpen and rotation. Even though Bonser struggled in a relief appearance earlier this week, I like the idea of him utilizing his stuff out of the bullpen. I chose Perkins as the No. 5 starter, but that spot could just as easily go to Kevin Slowey. If Liriano has a setback or one of the youngsters struggle, Nick Blackburn and Brian Duensing are waiting in Triple-A to step in. I picked Casilla as the starting second baseman, but it seems Punto could end up in that spot; either way, the other one starts the season as a versatile bench player and pinch-running option.

By my admittedly quick and sloppy calculation, the payroll on this roster adds up to around $70 million, which is right around where they are this year.

So what do you think? Am I out of my mind or does plan of action make some sense?

  1. I'm not sold on Atkins batting 4th there, but I like Atkins as a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I just figured he'd work there for the sake of lefty/righty balance. I like Atkins power better than Cuddyer's at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  3. tis true. I would rank him just ahead of Cuddyer as well. Hmm, if only this could come true.

    ReplyDelete
  4. The only part I don't like is Bonds. All the controversey around him has nothing to do with it, but rather I just don't like him for some reason. However, the rest of it looks excellent--and the contingency plan for the rotation is a good idea, since Frisco might not be up to stratch to start (but I hope he is!).

As soon as I read that the Giants aren't going to re-sign Bonds, I thought maybe the Twins should go after him. Who cares if he's a wee bit of a jerk? It would be sweet to have a major homerun threat like that in the lineup. I would seriously love to have someone in the lineup who goes up to the plate expecting to smack the crap out of the ball. Although I wonder...now that he owns the record for homers, do you think he'd still be as motivated?

  6. Well thought out for 2008. I think the Bonds thing is a stretch - but I like the one year commitment. It doesn't solve the 2009 issue of signing Justin and filling a hole LAB (life after bonds). I'm a bit concerned with the 3-year or 5-year plan.

i think that is a great trade. before this disappointing offensive season, we all thought that 2008 would be our year since our pitching would be so good. But seeing how the offense was non-existent for most of the season, it is going to be hard for us to get very far next year. i like the idea of getting good young players that are going to be here past 2008. i love johan, but this sounds like about the best possible deal we can get for him. i don't think one more year of him is going to be worth it if this deal can really happen. also a lot of johan's numbers have gone downhill the past 3 years, you have to wonder if he'll even be worth half of what he is going to get paid.

  8. Anonymous9:25 AM

Overall I think these would be some good moves. I think it is a good way to get good young guys while potentially staying competetive. There is the argument to be made that we should put all our eggs in one basket and go for it next year by keeping Santana, but I'm not sure how we'd upgrade the offense under this scenario. Unfortunately I'm afraid the organization is going to go somewhere in between by standing pat, not doing anything and then either losing Santana in a bidding war next winter, or trading him for less value at the deadline if we don't look like we can contend.

Excellent post. I like it all. Silva, the trades, and Bonds. That would be a team that could compete for a division title. A healthy Bonds could maybe approach 800 HRs. He'd get his 3000th hit. Plus, he'd provide some much needed punch.

Trade Johan Santana to Dodgers for OF Matt Kemp and SP Clayton Kershaw.

While Kershaw certainly looks like a stud in the making, I'd like a little more than Kemp and Kershaw for the best pitcher in the game every year for the last 4 (not the one with the best season, to riff on a recent thread elsewhere).

like, mebbe, Delwyn Young? Is he athletic enough to play CF? Or, failing that, Andre Ethier (same question)?

or if neither of those deals would work, mebbe throw in Wilson Betemit to the original deal.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Although I wonder...now that he owns the record for homers, do you think he'd still be as motivated?

Pretty much the only thing Bonds has yet to do in his illustrious career is win a World Series. I think the desire to win one before he retires would motivate him enough to play his ass off next year and try and get the Twins there.

I think the Bonds thing is a stretch - but I like the one year commitment. It doesn't solve the 2009 issue of signing Justin and filling a hole LAB (life after bonds). I'm a bit concerned with the 3-year or 5-year plan.

I thought about that too, but I was thinking maybe after next year a DH candidate would arise from the minor leagues (perhaps a Brock Peterson). If not, there should be money available to find another guy in free agency, particularly if the payroll starts to escalate with the stadium just a year away.

or if neither of those deals would work, mebbe throw in Wilson Betemit to the original deal.

Betemit was traded to the Yankees this year.

love your blog. some thoughts on your proposed moves. i don't think the Twins can afford to let Hunter walk AND trade Santana. that is the heart and soul of the ball club. Who is going to lead this team? I agree Hunter is getting up there in years, but sometimes you are paying for more than just the player on the field. Santana is in his prime and is one of the most exciting pitchers in baseball. Leaves an entire rotation of unproven talent. Assuming Lariano is the same pitcher and Garza and Baker start pitching consistently, we might be ok, but we're too young. Pitching is normally our strength. I don't think resigning Silva for that kind of money is worth it. Yes, a veteran pitcher on a staff of kids, but a headcase and inconsistent as well.
The thing that gets me is we have one of the richest men in the world owning the Twins. Who are you going to pay to play on this team? Someone casually mentioned to me upon hearing about Terry Ryan's stepping down, that now that Polad has a new stadium in place, he's going to gut the team and still make a profit. Never thought about it, but starting to think there's some validity to the comment. Why pay top dollar to top talent, when the seats will be full anyway and you're taking a much bigger piece of the pie from the stadium?
Next up...Joe Nathan. Remember when people were saying we should trade (or not resign) Nathan and let Neschek be the closer when we was lights out before the All-Star break? Hitters seemed to figure him out in the second half of the season. I like Neschek, but it's that same thinking that these young talents are going to step in immediately and pick, where multiple All-Stars have left off.
I love the potential of Kubel, Morneau, Mauer, Cuddyer Lariano, and the rest, but beyond last season, none of them has shown the ability to carry this club by themselves. Not saying they cannot, but we're putting a lot on their shoulders, if the Twins let Torri go and trade Santana. One of them has to stay for this team to compete next year and the others need to step up. Again, excellent proposals and analysis once again, just think this thing extends beyond dollars and cents.

    Good post today.
In your proposition, letting Hunter walk and trading Santana are two parts of one transaction, with a goal of freeing up 25 million to clear payroll for Bonds and getting two young players to build on.

Bold moves to be sure, but I do not endorse trading Santana. He is the best pitcher in the game. They won't recover from trading him, although they might recover from letting Hunter go.

Also - we can not put Liriano down as the No.1 starter. The best we can hope for is that he is the 5th starter, who makes maybe 15 starts. All Tommy John pitchers struggle their first year back. He may be our ace in 2010, but we are not there yet.

  15. The idea of Bonds is covered in Joe Christensen's article today in the Star Tribune........

Yeah, I mentioned that. It was pretty coincidental, because I finished typing up this post last night thinking that the Bonds thing might have been too big a stretch, then I headed over to the Star Trib web site and found that Joe had just posted that article.

    Doubleplusgood,
Nice comment, I understand your viewpoint. I guess I just personally feel that talent trumps "veteran presence," or whatever you want to call it. I think that the collection of young talent that would be in place with my plan gives the Twins a great shot at making the playoffs next year, and also lays a great foundation or the future. This team would be absolutely sick in two years when the new ballpark opens.

  17. Bold moves to be sure, but I do not endorse trading Santana. He is the best pitcher in the game. They won't recover from trading him, although they might recover from letting Hunter go.

The Twins would have a hard time getting fair value for Santana, so if they really have a chance to re-sign him I'd be down with that. I just don't think they have a good shot to do so.

With that being the case, I think that they'd have an extremely hard time using the draft picks they'd get via FA compensation to acquire a pair of players anywhere near as good as Kemp and Kershaw. It's also worth noting that the Kemp/Kershaw deal is probably a conservative guess -- if other teams get into the bidding this offseason, the Twins could easily get another good prospect or two.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Also, Chancellor, I wouldn't say it's necessarily true that "All Tommy John pitchers struggle their first year back." John Smoltz had the surgery in 2000 and came back to post a 3.36 ERA in 2001, although he did have to be moved to the bullpen. You're right in general, but I don't think it's unthinkable that Liriano could come back and pitch well next season. Either way, you can juggle the rotation spots however you want, and like I said, there's enough depth to replace guys that struggle or get hurt.

Is Jesse Crain out for next year as well?

It takes a long time to recover from surgery for a torn labrum and rotator cuff -- generally over a year. Many never come back from it. Since he got the surgery at the end of May, I don't see any way he'll be able to contribute at the start of next season; in fact, I'd say anything the Twins get out of Crain in the 2008 season would be a bonus.

I just heard Top Jimmy say last night that Michael Cuddyer is the clubhouse leader. So, losing Hunter doesn't mean that the clubhouse leader is leaving.

Then again, I've always maintained that the clubhouse leader stuff is a bunch of baloney.

well what can i say that already hasn't been said...

i am one that does not want to see Santana go, like i said, i want to see that 1-2 punch that he will bring when Liriano is back...but a great point was brought up, the fact that the year after this surgery, Liriano cannot be expected to perform at his best...as for Bonds, i hate him, but saying that i would probably cheer for him if he was on the Twins...i like atkins, but i don't know if he would really fix anything in the short term...to be honest, this was a great post, with great ideas, but as we all know the twins will make no moves this offseason unless it is one that brings a veteran that has seen better days, and hunter will be gone...

I love the twins, and i'm just hoping that someone will come out of the woodwork and help win some games...

Apart from extorting one more player from the Dodgers as mentioned, this is EXACTLY what I would pursue as the Twins GM. Bonds may not be the only answer at DH, the point is to sign SOMEONE who can hit the ball over the fence every once in a while. I don't think Barry will get 18 MM either, but he'll probably hold out for 10 MM. Face reality--Hunter and Santana are both gone. A big haul from a Santana deal could key this team's true resurgence when (I pray to my personal Pohlad doll) payroll actually may approach the league median. The idea is to turn this team from a bunch of stars and a pile of crap into a team with a few more good players, reasonable depth and five good, not fantastic starters. If you score more than a run a week, you can win with the likes of Baker, Silva, et.al, and if Garza, Liriano and Perkins reach their potential (if not in 08, by 09 or 10) not to mention Liriano, you MAY just get an elite pitching staff to go with the refurbished lineup and win something. The payroll surge if it materializes is going to come too early for Johan and Torii...so be it. This kind of plan keeps the Twins afloat in 08, allows the long term contracts for Morneau and perhaps Cuddyer to be signed, and gives us a bright future moving into better days in terms of money available. Twenty bucks says they do none of the above, sign Mike Sweeney, overpay for Torii, do nothing with Johan and wait to unravel in 08. God, I'm a pessimist....

At this point, I don't really care whether Punto or Casilla is the starting second baseman at the beginning of the 2008 season. As I've said in the past, neither has really shown this year to be a vastly superior option to the other. I simply plugged Casilla in as the starter because I see Punto as a more valuable bench player, in light of his versatility.

  27. There's been talk in Colorado that the Rockies may try to move Stewart to either 2nd Base or to Right Field, which would then make Kaz Matsui/Brad Hawpe the expendable one.

But I do like the idea of trading for Adkins none-the-less.

I wouldn't mind seeing those moves happen, but (like you know) it's very unlikely.

Possession of Santana is really moot next season unless they can re-sign him or reach the playoffs. Hunter won't be resigned and he shouldn't be.

Bold moves to be sure, but I do not endorse trading Santana. He is the best pitcher in the game. They won't recover from trading him, although they might recover from letting Hunter go.

Well, they're likely to lose Santana anyway in a year. Santana's absense will be eisier to cover in Minnesota's pitching-rich organization, but there's no logic behind resigning a 33yr old centerfielder comming off a hot season to what he's going to see on the open market. If he signed a five or six year deal with the twins, it would take the Twins five or six years to recover from the mistake.

What about Tolbert at 2B? I know the Twins don't like to actually play the guys they've worked hard to develop (OK, it just seems that way sometimes) but why is it that everyone just assumes we only have these 2 choices to pick from at 2B?

Here's one. I have no idea if it's a legitimate idea, or way over the top.
David Wright/Jose Reyes for Santana/Bartlett/and either Kubel, Buscher, or more pitching. Assuming that we resign Hunter. It sounds like too much for the Mets to give up, and could be a lot more payroll for the Twins. But could solve offensive problems, that's for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anonymous4:39 PM

If Kubel is part of that trade, make Garret Jones DH or left field, I'd like a to see what he does with a full year of seeing big league pitching. If you use him in left, i don't know exactly who would DH, drawing a blank at the moment. Or if Jones is DH, I think Tyner could suffice in left with the added offense from Reyes and Wright.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anonymous1:55 PM

I'd make sure you get Andy Laroche back in the Santana deal too.

Atkins is a Boras client and has already turned down a very lucrative extension and this is his last year before UFA. So your trading away Swarzak for a rental and no solution after next year at 3B.

I have little to no confidence in Moses, Winfree, & Buscher being a legitimate starting caliber 3B. Thats why you must demand for Laroche, Kemp, & Kershaw.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I like the though process, but disagree with most of this.

Santana has been the most durable pitcher in the majors the last four seasons. Having an ace like him makes it possible to win it all. Get hitters, keep Santana. If you get 1/2 the value in July if he's not going to re-sign, worth the shot. This team can seriously contend if the right hitters are brought in. And they have the pitching prospets to make that happen.

Let Hunter go. But trade prospects for hitters. What if the Twins traded Sosa/Swarzak/Slowey/Blackburn and got A. Dunn and Bay in return? Giving up too much? I think not.

A Kemp-Kershaw deal just isn't enough for a good shot at a playoff run next year with Santana. I'm not sold Kemp is a star and Kershaw is still a pitching prospect. It's always a coin flip if they pan out.
