We watched is regression in the big leagues and now they're calling him up using a "Johnny come lately" line of reasoning.
As for Blackburn. Even on full rest, they would have left him down there. He's had all the chances in the world this year, +1 and mostly failed. He stays in AAA this year, even in September, and will get another shot next year. He is signed for a few more, but he needs AAA and perhaps winter ball to find his sinker and add a changeup to help get lefties out. Otherwise, he's doomed for good. The Twins don't want to risk their investment on Blackie by bringing him up to get shelled and lose what little confidence he has left.
Since I'm usually optimistic, I'll pull for Perk having a nice game as the Sox haven't seen him in a long time. But, Perk only managed a 5 and change ERA against them in the past...Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10984504525577892812noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11215059.post-48557752473237209362010-08-11T11:07:23.995-05:002010-08-11T11:07:23.995-05:00I'd rather take Perk on full rest than Black o...I'd rather take Perk on full rest than Black on short rest. Perkins and Blackburn are really in the same boat. Terrible all year but decent history beyond that and good lately in AAA.

What I really like about using Perkins though? The fact that it is in the heat of the race down in Chicago. Perkins has been a bit of a malcontent. So here you throw him into the belly of the beast.

If he performs well, we maybe win a big game. If he tanks, the management can kind of point at that and say they gave him a great chance and he blew it.

What would really be interesting is if Perk dominates. Then what the heck do you do? Put him in the pen? Demote Duensing? Or just ship him back to AAA until September.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11215059.post-80654051540105090042010-08-11T09:47:23.487-05:002010-08-11T09:47:23.487-05:00Lefty,

He was the worst pitcher in the league for most of the year. He had an ERA around 10 for the last month-plus of "pitching". He threw exclusively sinkerballs that didn't sink (i.e. batting practice). His MLB confidence is shot.

No, pretty much any pitcher above rookie league ball is a better option "in a game for first place" than Blackburn on 3 days rest.Ed Bastnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11215059.post-83777142727735981002010-08-11T09:07:28.787-05:002010-08-11T09:07:28.787-05:00"Could Blackburn pitching on 3-days rest real..."Could Blackburn pitching on 3-days rest really be that much worse of an option than Perk?"

This statement is a great sample in a game my friend and I sometimes play. Perkins has a 4-9 record with a 6.08 ERA in AAA, and opponents are teeing off on him to the tune of .308 AVG and 14 HRs.

Blackburn, on the other hand, has been stellar since he shipped off to Rochester. He's 0-0, but in 2 starts, he's allowed only 2 runs and opponents are batting only .175.

In a game for first place, wouldn't Blackburn going on 3 days rest be a better option than Perkins?TSBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18295825953008271160noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11215059.post-35993805576819894882010-08-11T07:36:50.912-05:002010-08-11T07:36:50.912-05:00With 49 games to go, I'd say we're in the ...With 49 games to go, I'd say we're in the exact same position we were in back in March: good enough pitching to win the Central, not good enough to win a playoff series vs. the East.Ed Bastnoreply@blogger.com
