I came up with:

1. Crain was the only relief pitcher who hadn't been used the night before.

2. Crain was pitching well in that game.

3. The score was tied. It could well go into extra innings, which might overtax and already tired bullpen.

4. There is a big series with the White Sox coming up. We want to have a rested bullpen going into that series.

Thus, while I agree with you, there are at least some reasons for leaving Crain in the way he did. I think he made the wrong choice, but I can't say it was totally unjustified.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11215059.post-1145604466139030642006-04-21T02:27:00.000-05:002006-04-21T02:27:00.000-05:00While I too was frustrated that Gardy again went t...While I too was frustrated that Gardy again went to Crain in a key situation and left him in far too long, I'm not sure I would agree that Gardy "can't seem to figure out the basics of bullpen management." I think in general he handles his bullpen a lot better than many other managers. His stubborn refusal to use Nathan at all outside of 9th inning save situations is truly frustrating, but that seems to a problem Gardy shares with almost every other manager in the league.Nick N.https://www.blogger.com/profile/00848574337121154690noreply@blogger.com
