Mo-Town Funk

One way or another, the Twins find a way to lose in Detroit. If it's not the pitching, it's the offense. Last night, it was the latter. Johan Santana predictably delivered another brilliant performance, striking out a season-high 12 while allowing only four hits and one walk over eight innings, but Vance Wilson hit a two-run homer against him in the eighth and that was all the Tigers would need as they picked up a 2-0 victory over the Twins.

Tigers' starter Justin Verlander was not exactly dominant -- he pitched eight innings and did not collect a strikeout. Still, he allowed only six hits and did not walk anyone, which was good enough to shut out the Twins.

Things are looking pretty grim right now for the Twins, who are on a four-game losing streak. The outlook probably won't improve today with Brad Radke facing Kenny Rogers. Still, there is at least some reason for optimism. We won't have to watch Carlos Silva or Kyle Lohse make a start in the near future, and instead we'll get a look at youngsters Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser in starting roles.

I'll be heading to Milwaukee this weekend, and I will be attending the Twins/Brewers game at Miller Park on Friday night. Hopefully I will have Internet access and be able to post on the experience, but if not, have a good weekend everyone and I will be back Sunday.

The Twins have about 12 games left in the month. To have any realistic shot at competing this year, they really need to win atleast 8, preferably 9 games. This puts them at around the .500 mark at the end of May. If they go through and basically split these games or do any worse, then I think the Twins should start looking to make good deals, and get what they can for their free agent to be's who they will not pick up.

On another note, the Brewers are looking for a back up shortstop while J.J Hardy is on the DL. All they have right now is super utility Bill Hall. What a coincidence, the Twins happen to be in Beer town this weekend and have a back up shortstop to offer and a shortstop in AAA ready to see if he can handle a big league job. But no, that would be way to efficient.

Anyway big tests coming up, 3 lefties in 4 days, 1 being a veteran who surely knows Twins hitters by now, and the other 2 being young studs on a Brewers team I completley envy right about now. No more excuses, its pretty much now or start making some future impacting decisions.

Remember just couple of years ago when we used to own the Tigers? That was awesome. Anyway, we not only get to see our three rookie pitchers throw this weekend, we get to see them bat (but not necessarily hit) as well. That alone might be worth the price of admission.

i'm beginning to wonder that the Twins might actually be cursed? After the second inning I predicted that the Tigers would win 5 to 4, with Tori swinging at the first pitch and leaving runners on to end the game.

I wasn't to far off. Pretty typical, Radke gets bombed in the beginning, batters squander oppurtunities, Tori ends the game with runners on(swinging at the second pitch, first strike)

I maintain that the Twins' current funk is greatly attributable to Carlos Silva's start last Sunday. The Twins were in a groove, and they had just scraped together seven first-inning runs against a very tough pitcher. To have Silva throw another dud and lose that game for them, it sucked the wind right out of the team's sails. They haven't won a game since.

While I agree Silva took the wind out of their sails, all teams have games like that every year. The good ones bounce back quicker.
